Behind The Tern Retreat

Why Romansbaai?

Some places impress you at first sight. Others quietly become part of your life.

Romansbaai did exactly that.
We have always loved South Africa for its uncomplicated way of life, outstanding food, exceptional wines and breathtaking landscapes โ€” but above all, for its people. Warm, open, positive and welcoming, with an infectious zest for life and a natural love of being outdoors and sharing good times with friends.
Here, every day invites you to slow down. Whether exploring scenic hiking trails, cycling through nature, visiting nearby wineries or simply watching whales from the shoreline.
And perhaps that is what keeps drawing us back: the feeling that life here is meant to be lived outside, together, and with a little more time to simply enjoy it.

What truly makes Romansbaai special is its remarkable balance.
Cool Antarctic breezes keep summer pleasantly comfortable, while the ocean creates mild winters, fresh air and unforgettable star-filled nights.

When we found this place, everything simply felt right.
Privacy, uninterrupted views from the mountains to the ocean, flowering Fynbos on our
doorstep, and the convenience of Gansbaai just minutes away.
Close enough to Cape Town for easy travel.

Far enough to hear nothing but birds, the wind and the sea.

Why tern?

The retreat takes its name from Tern Street, where it will one day welcome guests from around the world.

But the name means more than an address.

Terns spend much of their lives travelling between continents before returning to places that feel like home.

We hope The Tern Retreat becomes one of those places.
A place worth returning to.

Again and again.
